PRIDE WITHOUT BORDERS 1998 NO DISCRIMINATION DON'T HATE...APPRECIATE... (front)

Johannesburg's annual pride march was the first in the country and on the continent, while Cape Town's pride march was initiated in 1993. It is unclear which city's LGBTQ community created this T-shirt, but its slogan and the year of its making suggest support for the LGBTQ+ refugees seeking asylum in South Africa from the draconian, homophobic laws in place in much of Africa. In 1998, South Africa began to recognise persecution based on gender and sexuality as legitimate grounds for asylum. It is the only country in Africa to have done so.
