In September 1985, The ECC's Troops Out of the Township campaign, spearheaded by a three-week fast by three ECC activists, attracted thousands to its rallies, and its publicity material, including posters with slogans like "Wat soek jy in die townships troepie?" (What are you doing in the townships soldier?)
