Disinvestment from South Africa was first advocated in the 1960s, in protest against South Africa's system of apartheid, but was not implemented on a significant scale until the mid-1980s. In 1986, this campaign culminated in US federal legislation to boycott apartheid South Africa. The economic pressure that this legislation placed on SA is credited by some as being a large factor in dismantling the apartheid system.
