Included in Common is a hanging installation of T-shirts made for protests in support of labour, voting, gender and LGBTQI+ rights, loaned from the South African History Archive (SAHA) and the GALA Queer Archive. Lalela's leadership group and alumni were invited to participate in a DIY screen-printing workshop, making their own protest T-shirts in response to the exhibition.
Working in groups, they were asked to discuss and then select an issue which they felt strongly about and then visually express their feelings about this issue in the form of a simple but impactful combination of image and text. Using pantyhose, an embroidery hoop, decoupage glue, and fabric paint, each group screen-printed their T-shirts with messages addressing their concerns, such as sexual objectification, climate change, and racial discrimination.
