Ilze Wolff (architect and independent curator), Felicia Mings (academic curator, Art Institute of Chicago), Faheem Majeed (artist, South Shore, Chicago) and Sinazo Chiya (writer; press liaison at Stevenson, Cape Town) come together to address creative strategies and operational tactics undertaken by artistic practitioners responding to social and political urgencies. Their conversation asks after the role of curatorial practices in shaping and nurturing arts communities within Cape Town and South Africa at large.

Moderated by Thembinkosi Goniwe (artist, art historian, and visiting researcher at the Wits School of Arts), the discussion turned on the following questions:

Where do curatorial practices operate in South Africa, and what are the sites for such critical enquiries? How can independent practitioners, and private and public institutions work collaboratively to share resources, despite divergent missions?

Where is the Curatorial? came together as part of a curatorial exchange between the Art Institute Chicago and A4 Arts supported by the McArthur grant.
