While working in the A4 Library, writers in residence at the Muholi Art Institute (a few city blocks from the foundation) fell into conversation with A4's team. A discussion around printed matter asked how the foundation's wayfinder template might lend itself to external practitioners as a tool for framing and sharing process and practice. Imagining a Black and Queer Institution is the result of this enquiry. Recast as a shareable 'apparatus', the wayfinder becomes a flexible format with which to compile research in different registers, extending beyond A4's exhibition programme.

Imagining a Black and Queer Institute was made with the support of A4 Arts Foundation’s press and design team. A limited print run was produced on-site. The writers hold both the right to reprint the work and the copyright to the discrete texts and images included in the document.
