Boytchie (aka Phillip Newman) iterates and reiterates a sculptural installation centred around two specific found objects: a broken chair and an axe. In his initial engagement with these objects, Phillip found a compelling tension in their ability to evoke both aggression and fragility when combined. This tension, he suggests, reflects the public perceptions and inner emotional turmoil that characterise the experiences of many young men of colour in Cape Town. Phillip uses his time in Goods to play with materiality, exploring the limits of the sculpture’s fragility, without the pressure of permanence.

Goods is a project space for work in process and thinking aloud. The location’s transitory nature as a thoroughfare encourages a light-footed navigation of curatorial and artistic practice and rapid prototyping of ideas.
