Joining a global celebration to mark the late avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas' 100th birthday, A4 is screening his Zefiro Torna or Scenes from the Life of George Maciunas (Fluxus) in our Library. The screening coincides with the opening of The Future Is Behind Us in A4's Gallery.
Mekas' Zefiro Torna is a filmic diary of George Maciunas, a fellow Lithuanian expatriate and artist. Notating his life between 1952 and 1978, the footage includes scenes of Fluxus gatherings populated by such notable figures as Andy Warhol, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono (among others), paired with more intimate views into Maciunas' life – from his wedding day to his hospital room, three days before he died. The film is set to Zefiro torna, the madrigal by Monteverdi from which it takes its title, and concludes with an audio recording of Mekas reading from Maciunas' final diary entries.
The screening is made possible with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in South Africa and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
