"I think what was motivating us was a kind of frustration – as young artists – with not having access to, say, the Durban Art Gallery and the Natal Society of Art (now KZNSA). We realised in retrospect that we were in opposition, or an alternative to those spaces. But at the time, we were just doing our thing. Many of us were interested in the alternative music scene, for example. And there were organisations like the Community Arts Workshop which was more like an education space. The phenomenon of doing an ad-hoc kind of thing wasn't unusual."
