A4 provides free access to a library in which you can learn about art and artists. Our library focuses on the practices of artists from South Africa and Majority World countries.

A4 offers you access to an exhibition programme that shares and shows the work of exceptional arts practitioners.

A4 produces free printed matter takeaways in the form of our exhibition wayfinders, in which you can read about artworks and artists, including conversations between practitioners and our curatorial team.

A4 has a website that contains robust content about the artworks and the artists with whom we work.

A4 designs youth programmes focused on learning curatorial skills with partner institutions.

You can purchase coffee at our coffee shop; art books and design objects at Proto, our museum store.

We receive a very high volume of proposals and requests from arts practitioners. We thank you for understanding that we only have capacity to reply to applicants whose projects are of interest to our curatorial team.

The exhibition programme is defined by our curators and follows their research interests. Practitioners are invited to take part in our exhibitions, which can be group exhibitions or can focus on the practice of an individual.

A4 does not buy artworks. We loan or commission artworks from artists, and we loan artworks from galleries, public collections, and private collections, to share with the public through our exhibition programme.

The artworks shown in our exhibitions are not for sale through A4 Arts Foundation. Any queries about selling or purchasing artworks should be directed to artists' intermediaries or commercial galleries.

A4 builds a critical ‘middle’ in South Africa between the strong commercial sector, on the one hand, and the academic environment, on the other. We believe it is necessary to be a project space that provides artists with the support to experiment and take risks in their practices, and where the public can interact with art and artworks, free of charge.

In 2018, claims were made that A4 was artwashing. These claims were investigated and deemed to be unfounded. We encourage you to review our programme here.

We offer free walkabouts of our exhibitions for students, and school groups, led by our team members. You can email us to organise a walkabout.
