A conceptual detour from the ubiquitous township tour.

Through a series of workshops, provocations and planning meetings, a group of young people from Lalela’s alumni are supported to design and facilitate an idiosyncratic exploration of their community, the township Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay.

Their first audience is a group of visiting curators from Chicago. The investigation wonders after curatorial and conceptual interventions that could challenge and transform the 'township tour' model and realise an earnest engagement with the space. The shared hope is for Lalela's alumni to continue to develop Ghetto Relay into a commercial and artistic venture.

The curatorial exchange between Chicago and Cape Town was made possible by the support of the McArthur Foundation.
