Artist in Residence Dorothee Kreutzfeldt

Throughout July and August 2016, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt spends time visiting surrounding sites, businesses and institutions, engaging the existing and planned architecture of 23 Buitenkant Street, and offering insights towards the organisational structure of A4.

Kreutzfeldt makes a mural that spans the walls of the first and second floor using paper, tape, charcoal and acrylic paint. Using the existing stairwells of the building, the mural also includes visual references to the building before the stripping process.

In addition, Kreutzfeldt engages in an open-ended and interdisciplinary inquiry into the area surrounding 23 Buitenkant. Textual, visual and material references gathered as sketches and photographs are collaged and photocopied alongside this process to form a loose document. Architectural ornaments and facades of the built environment intersect with the protrusions and erosions created through use by people, plants or other organic agents - allowing ditches dug for cables to sit alongside court rosters and self-seeded palm trees.

Photographic documentation of the mural and the additional collected documents are collated into a publication called 'Landing Above'. In combination, Kreutzfeldt’s work builds a complex portrait of the building and its surrounds.

Kreutzfeldt is an artist, published writer and visual-arts lecturer whose multimedia work responds to the structures and flows of a given environment.
