Artist-in-Residence Bonolo Kavula

On artist-in-residence Bonolo Kavula’s desk: The Thought is the Thing by Colin Richards, linocuts by Kavula, featuring her combinations of comic drawings and print-making forms.

Multi-disciplinary artist Bonolo Kavula uses her time as artist-in-residence at A4 to interrogate the four conditions of Conceptual Art laid out by Richards in his essay. She performs a self-reflexive study. Stand-up comedy, cartoon strips, and drawings interact with the political and historical legacy of print-making in South Africa.

Once a week, over six sessions, Bonolo Kavula engages with The Black and White Report Cape Town, an exhibition in A4's gallery by Dan Perjovschi, which saw Perjovschi draw directly onto the gallery walls.

Kavula offers both call and response to a group of relationships: the permanent versus the temporary, the unique versus multiples, as she explores the mediums of drawing, text and printed matter.
